Overview of Shore Temple Mahabalipuram
Shore Temple is located in Mahabalipuram city of Tamil Nadu state, one of the oldest temples of south India. There are three temples in the Shore Temple complex, one of them is big and two other temples are relatively small. Made of granite stones, this temple is a magnificent spectacle of Dravid architecture. Thin carvings on the walls of the temple are very attractive. The main temple of the Shore Temple is five-storey and it is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There is also a Shivling in the sanctum of the temple. The main attraction of the Shore Temple is five Pandav chariots, four of which are named after Pandavas, but the fifth chariot is known as Draupadi Ratha. All the chariots here are very spacious and different from each other. Their texture is an example of the craftsmanship of skilled artisans at that time.
History of Shore Temple
This temple was built during the rule of King Narasimhavarman II of the Pallava dynasty (Narasimhavarman II). Mahabalipuram was a trading port at that time. The temple was built between 700-728 AD. During the rule of Pallava Dynasty, it is considered one of the earliest buildings constructed by cutting the stones. In the recent years, a wall of stone like the sea has been built in front of the temple so that this temple is not damaged due to erosion of the sea. In 1984, this temple was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dam was damaged due to the Tsunami in 2004 and some part of it was destroyed.

A Stone Temple: The temple part of the Shore Temple is made of granite stone which looks very beautiful in seeing. This temple is one of the most historic temples of south India.
The Seven Pagodas: The story of the seven pagodas associated with the Shore Temple is historic. There are seven pagoda stone statues in the courtyard of the temple which look very Indian. Together with this pagoda shows that the same kind and seven temples are located in different places. But in front of people it remains a story.
Lord Shiva and Vishnu: The Shore Temple is the temple of Lord Shiva and Vishnu ji, hence you will also see the Shivlinga made from the Puranic period in the temple.
Beautiful Animal Sculpture: The Shore Temple was built by the Pallava kings. Later, many other idols such as cow, bull, durga and lion were created in the temples by the people of the Chola dynasty, which are very amazing to see.

Through all the means of transport, Shore temple is well connected to the main city. Through different nearby destinations, you can take bus to Mahabalipuram. After reaching Mahabalipuram, you can go on shore temple on foot also, or you can also hire bus or taxi from any places of Tamil Nadu to reach Shore Temple.
