The present temple surrounded by about 10 feet high pavilion was built during the rule of the kings of the Pandya dynasty. Goddess Kumari was the goddess Devi of the Pandya kings. According to mythological allegations, the Goddess of power was devoted to the ending of Banasur. When religion began to be destroyed by the atrocities of Banasur, all the gods reached the refuge of Lord Vishnu. They told the deities that only the Goddess could end up with the defeat of that Asura. It was known to Lord Vishnu that Banasur has got so many boons that no one can kill him. But he did not ask for this boon that a virgin could not put an end to it. Gods pleased Parasakti from their tenacity and took the promise of liberation from Banasura. Then the Goddess embraced the form of a girl.

End of Banasura

After a few years, when the girl's youth was received, it was decided that her marriage to Lord Shiva in 'Suchindram' was fixed because the goddess was a form of Parvati. But Narada Muni's secret efforts did not complete her marriage and she took a fast to live like a virgin. Narad ji knew that the goal of the incarnation of the Goddess is to destroy the Baanasur. Can be fulfilled this goal only as a virgin girl. Then that moment arrived. When Banasur heard about the beauty of the Goddess, she approached him with a marriage proposal. When the goddess was angry, Banasur challenged him for the war. At that time, the battle of Baanasur ended with the help of her body as a virgin. Then, the gods established a temple of Kanyakumari form of Parashakti on the beach. On this basis, this place was also called Kanyakumari and the temple was called the 'Kumari Amman' or 'Kumari Devi' temple.
