Scattered with Old Portuguese churches, the houses of the beautiful country are decorated with dark rosewood stuff, many art galleries and several relic centers, Margao is a widespread tourist destination. Goa's second largest city after Vasco da Gama, it is also a busy viable and trade center. The word Margao was derived from 'Mathgram', which accurately known as 'village of temples'. After the Portuguese incursion, many princely churches and citadels were built here. But the small town has reserved its old Hindu values and traditions.
History Margao
The story of Margao is very ironic and expressive. Before the Portuguese settlers settled down, Margao was the homespun of the Vaishnavas.
Ancient Margao were considered as temples cities because there were innumerable Hindu temples in this portion of the country. The "maths" of Vaishnavism lived mainly in the city of Margao. Throughout ancient times, the city was known as Madgaon, but with the arrival of Portuguese residents, the name was changed to Margao. The first residents of Margao settled in the vicinity of the Damodar Temple. Later, the temple was destroyed and in its place the Church of the Holy Spirit was built. With the advent of the Portuguese settlers, most of the Hindu temples were soon destroyed, and Hinduism was completely eliminated from the land of Margao. During the Portuguese government, Christianity became the main religion. During that time, many Hindus migrated to other parts of the country, because most of the local residents were forced to convert their religion to Christianity.
Commercial and trade transactions increased during the period before independence when the Portuguese colonists established their camping in Margao. It was one of the main business cities of the country. Several items were marketed throughout the year of the river. Margaon was once known as the organizational and tradeable center of the Portuguese monarchs. Many ancient constructions, sculptures, huge buildings and museums have preserved ancient scriptures, which are evidence of the magnificent history of Margao.
Best time to visit Margao
Despite the fact that it very well may be called an unsurpassed goal yet the best time to visit Margao in Goa is between the long periods winter season i.e. October and April. Amid this time the climate is extremely wonderful and the temperature does not goes past 32 degree Celsius.
