Packing the right gear keeps your trip comfortable and safe across changing mountain altitudes. Use this quick checklist to pack smart:
1. Clothing & Footwear
Layering: Thermals (top/bottom), fleece jacket, and windproof heavy down jacket.
Footwear: Water-resistant trekking shoes with deep ankle support and strong rubber grip.
Accessories: Waterproof gloves, woolen cap (covering ears), neck gaiter, and thick woolen socks.
2. Sun & Trekking Gear
Eye & Skin Protection: Dark UV sunglasses (to prevent snow glare), SPF 50+ sunscreen, lip balm, and moisturizer.
Trekking Support: 20–30L daypack (with rain cover), collapsible trekking poles, and a reusable water bottle.
3. Medical, Cash & Tech
First-Aid: Altitude sickness meds, pain relievers, motion sickness pills, cold medicine, and band-aids.
Cash: Carry enough physical cash from Rishikesh or Ukhimath (no ATMs in Chopta, weak UPI signal).
Power Backup: 10,000–20,000 mAh power bank (cold weather drains phone batteries fast).
Auli is approximately 140 to 148 km from Chopta. The road journey takes around 5 to 6 hours via Gopeshwar and Joshimath, winding through scenic mountain passes and forest valleys.
Connectivity is very unreliable. Chopta has no working ATMs, and cellular networks (Jio/BSNL) are weak, causing UPI payments to frequently fail. In Auli and Joshimath, digital payments work near major resorts, but local shops still prefer cash. Always carry sufficient physical cash from Rishikesh, Rudraprayag, or Ukhimath.
Yes, beginners and children aged 7 and above can comfortably complete the trek. The trail up to Tungnath Temple (3.5 km) is well-paved with a gradual slope. The final 1.5 km climb from Tungnath to Chandrashila Peak is steeper, but safe for anyone with basic physical fitness and proper trekking shoes.
Yes, our all-inclusive Auli Chopta tour package covers ground transport assistance up to the cable car and ski points. Cable car / chair lift tickets (approx. ₹1,000 per person) are pre-arranged in your final itinerary to save you time and long queue waiting hours at the Joshimath boarding station.
For snow sports and skiing, the best months are December to March. For green alpine meadows, comfortable weather, and clear temple trekking, visit between April and June or during the post-monsoon autumn months of October and November.
BSNL and Jio provide decent coverage in Auli and Joshimath for calls and 4G data. In Chopta Valley, mobile signals are extremely weak or non-existent once you enter the forest zone, though basic voice connectivity (primarily BSNL) works at a few open spots along the trail.
In case of sudden heavy blockages near Chopta, transfers are adjusted using local 4x4 vehicles (like Bolero with snow chains), or alternative base stays near Ukhimath/Gopeshwar are arranged to ensure safety without skipping key attractions.
