Arikamedu is a historical place in Tamil Nadu that is situated in 3 km from Puducherry on the southern tropical coast.


Origin of Arikamedu Pondicherry

In some places in Arikamedu in 1945 AD, the Archaeological Service of India has excavated the department. The antiquities of a huge warehouse are available in the excavations of two Sectors in Arikamedu. Arikamedu was built in 50 AD. In sector two, four levels of ordered construction have been detected. Remnants of muddy lands from Arikamedu have been obtained from the first century BC to the age of 200 AD. Many Roman objects have been found in residues derived from Arikamedu, including handmade alcohol vases, Roman lamps, Roman crystals, etc.

It is evident from the derived residues that Arikamedu was a thriving commercial port on the east coast, which had close trade relations with China, Malaya and Rome. From here only Indian products, beads, pearls, muslin, aromatic substances, perfumes, spices and silk were used, but according to the interests and specimens of the Romans, the products were also sent to Rome. In exchange for these items from Rome, gold came to India in large quantities. On the basis of various tests, it can be said that the use of Romans Arikamedu was used in the first century BC. From the 2nd century AD C., the Romans used to pay the price of the products mainly in gold coins.
